Preserving the integrity of telomeres suggests a heightened quality of life, less risk of disease, and prolonged health well into our golden years.
We know that aging is inevitable. Then why do some people appear noticeably younger and healthier than their age? One of the best anti-aging strategies may be meditation. Science cautiously proves the link between meditation and aging well, through the efforts of Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Prize-winner and co-author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Telomere Effect.
Telomeres and the science of longevity
In 2009, Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, the former president of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and a professor of biology and physiology at the University of California in San Francisco, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her study of telomeres. More specifically, Blackburn discovered how science accurately measures our biological clock on aging. Read more.

Calm is an unseen force that comforts both people and animals alike.
In today’s intense and busy world, calm is a rare state of being. We don’t often think about it; it’s not an attribute we frequently strive to cultivate. However, the “state of calm” is under-recognized as an indispensable superpower—and it deserves our attention. Cultivating a state of calm within can enhance your career, your personal life, and even help you choose reason over panic in a crisis.
Calm in a crisis
The presence of calm was most evident in the striking example of US Airways Flight 1549.
On Jan. 15, 2009, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger lost thrust in both engines. In the dead of winter, the former Air Force fighter pilot made a calculated choice to land the Airbus A320 (weighing more than 82,000 pounds) onto the icy waters of the Hudson River. Without hesitation, Captain Sullenberger trusted his decades of experience as a seasoned pilot, combined with a deep “inner-knowing.” Pilots describe this rare combination as “deliberate calm.”

Meditation brings a sense of calm to patients, offering a posture of acceptance and optimism.
If you think chronic pain is rare, think again. According to a report from the Institute of Medicine, more than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, at the cost of about $600 billion a year. Chronic pain is near epidemic proportions across the U.S.
Acute pain vs. chronic pain
The onset of acute pain is sudden, caused by an injury like a burn or cut, a dental problem, a broken bone, or surgery. When the affected area heals, the pain usually subsides within a six-month timeframe, according to Cleveland Clinic, a nonprofit academic medical center. But chronic pain can continue to plague sufferers; lasting for months or even years after the affected area has healed. This occurs because the body continues to signal pain to the nervous system. The pain is real, and the effect stresses the body–and the patient. Chronic pain can immobilize patients, holding their life hostage by keeping them from their work, their daily activities, and even their social life. Read more.

Learn how meditation cultivates leadership naturally.
Leadership is an essential skill in the new bustling business environment. Some individuals believe leadership is about convincing others to join in on their way of thinking.

Memory and learning naturally decrease as we age. Meditation can help combat this trend.
During the past decade, I’ve heard the word “sustainable” used almost exclusively in the context of environmental issues. Yet the term simply means the ability to last or continue for a long time, without depleting resources.

A personal resource is an available means that’s afforded by the mind, or by one's personal capabilities—a source of supply, support, or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed. Shouldn't health and brain function be considered a source of support? Read more.
