As life rapidly changes around us, have you ever wondered how WiFi affects our health? As we adapt, we can take steps to preserve our health and vitality. Summer is an ideal opportunity to rebalance with self-care and time in nature.

Boost your health with four simple practices.

1) Earthing

Back in 1998, Clint Ober found success when he developed effective grounding systems for the cable television industry. He soon pioneered the Earthing movement, after learning the potential of grounding to improve human health. Learn more about Clint Ober at https://www.earthing.com/.

"Earthing (also known as grounding) refers to the discovery that bodily contact with the Earth's natural electric charge stabilizes the physiology at the deepest levels, reduces inflammation, pain, and stress, improves blood flow, energy, and sleep, and generates greater well-being." ScienceDirect.com

NONDIRECTIVE MEDITATION IMPROVES HEART HEALTH ❤️

Here's a great point of interest for this month's topic. Did you know that nondirective meditation benefits heart health in multiple ways?  We share five fascinating medical studies that you won't want to miss!

Improve heart rate variability (HRV).  Medical studies show nondirective meditation improves vagal nerve activity with increased Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Good HRV means a longer span between steady heartbeats and recovery with greater ease.

Improve vagal tone.  The vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve, the longest nerve of the human body. It is responsible for our heart, lungs, and digestion. This system has two branches: the sympathetic response responsible for "fight or flight," and the parasympathetic response responsible for "rest and digestion." Nondirective meditation engages the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic relaxation response, at the same time, the sympathetic stress response lessens.

Can we change our life experience?

By Lorraine Alexander

Americans have become accustomed to a stressful lifestyle. We know stress affects health, sleep, emotions and behavior.  How can we change this pattern?

There is a quote by Charles R. Swindoll "Life is 10 percent what happens to you, and 90 percent how you react to it." Have you ever noticed that people often react to the same stressors quite differently? While one person is deeply affected by a stressful event, another may take it in stride. Why? The answer is simple. Some of us have found our way back to that place of balance.

Sustaining the Body, Mind, and Spirit Through Meditation

Meditation: The New Sustainable Practice
By Lorraine Alexander, DASA Meditation

Memory and learning naturally decrease as we age.
Meditation can help combat this trend.
During the past decade, I’ve heard the word “sustainable” used almost exclusively in the context of environmental issues. Yet the term simply means the ability to last or continue for a long time, without depleting resources. A personal resource is an available means that’s afforded by the mind, or by one's personal capabilities—a source of supply, support or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed. Shouldn't health and brain function be considered a source of support?

In today’s busy world, we have too many demands and not enough quality time for family—and even less time to care for ourselves. We find ourselves in an unhealthy spiral, eating out of control. Often, we don't understand how we got there in the first place.

What triggers bad choices—emotions, fatigue?

If you're finding yourself reaching for an instant fix of comfort food, sugar, or anything quick, you're most likely making poor choices in your diet. This momentary lapse in good judgment could be caused by fatigue or stress. Meditation just may be the vehicle that breaks this unhealthy spiral.

"When practiced with consistency, meditation has been shown to greatly improve willpower and concentration. This is a prime example of neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to change. Meditation has also been shown to alter the brain's gray matter. This may be a big part of the reason why practitioners often experience significant improvements in memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress, according to a new study led by Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital." -Meditation and the Power of the Brains Plasticity, November 2015 Mind Body Vortex
Suppress impulse eating

Speaking from firsthand experience, poor choices in eating will only offer a temporary spike in energy. In the end, it can deplete your energy and add unwanted pounds as you load up on empty calories. More importantly, a diet lacking essential nutrients, high in sugar or fat is highly addictive - and according to reports, a hazard to our health. How can we break this spiral? Could meditation be the answer?

There are many hot buttons that can trigger poor food choices including stress, fatigue, emotional challenges, or simply not having enough time or energy to prepare healthy meals. That’s when we reach for that easy instant boost. When we feel this urge, we want (and need) immediate satisfaction— that junk food or sugar high.

50+ - It's Your Time to Shine.

If you're over 50, according to AARP you’ve arrived. You’re officially in the beginning of your golden years.  If you fit into this age group, you might view meditation as a somewhat abstract practice.  You might even say, "I’m too old to try something new like that."  You could be afraid, assuming it is difficult to learn, or you might worry that you could never contort your body into that pretzel-like lotus position.

"If you build it, he will come." ~ Field of Dreams 1989

Watching old movies on a rainy day is one of my favorite things to do.  One recent Saturday,  I watched a rerun of the classic 1989 flick "Field of Dreams."  We all remember the famous line “If you build it, he will come.”  That's when Iowa corn farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) starts hearing voices. The movie was not only about following your dreams - but also about realizing your potential. It reminded me about meditation, and how the practice directly links each of us to realize our potential. From there, we naturally become our best in our business environment as well.

We've arrived. Now, a stressful lifestyle is an American norm.
But what is the actual cost to our health and happiness?

It is now medically proven that stress can accumulate in the body, and the long-term effects can create anxiety, depression, impaired memory, impaired concentration, digestive issues, heart disease, sleep difficulties, and even weight gain.  Now more than ever, it is critical that we find new ways to cope with reducing stress in our life.  The first three considerations of lowering stress are to eat healthy, exercise, and get adequate sleep - but additionally, meditation is a viable method of stress reduction according to the Mayo Clinic.

How to re-wire your brain for happiness.

Over the past five decades, we have witnessed the lifestyle of an average American changing at lightning speed, in most cases for the better. Yet through our evolution and progress, many of us now find something very important is missing.  In our haste to keep up the pace, we have lost the ability to relax, to be comfortable in our own skin, to connect with others - and more importantly, we've lost the ability to reconnect with ourselves and nature.
