We've all seen the image of a light bulb associated with an original idea. But, what if many lights or original ideas came to us often - offering a constant stream of ingenuity. How might that change our life - our career?
The Game Changer...When all the Lights Come On
Despite the widely held belief that some people just aren't endowed with the creativity gene, "There's not any evidence that one person is inherently more creative than another," says Robert Epstein Ph.D. Instead, he says, creativity is something that anyone can cultivate.
~ From the article Science of Creativity, the American Psychological Association.
Reducing deep levels of stress through the regular practice of meditation can unleash your creativity while offering many other benefits including overall improved health. Seasoned meditators will wholeheartedly agree that creative sparks fly and solutions seem to arise effortlessly during meditation. Some meditators may even advise you to keep a pen and tablet next to you anytime you meditate, for the moments when creative lightning bolts strike. John Lennon himself found this to be true. It is told, his songwriting was deeply inspired during his meditations.
The recipe for creative success begins with inspiration, then expands to imagination, inventiveness, and originality. Oh yes, and of course, don't forget to add a pinch of courage.
Meditation can also enhance our creative process by cultivating these four life skills:
Expanded vision - captures a view of the ultimate potential or the big picture.
Foresight - offers insight into what will be needed in the future.
Resourcefulness - the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.
Problem-solving abilities - finding solutions to difficult or complex issues - using both the analytic and the creative mind.
"The brain waves of meditators show why they're healthier. Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex—brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. In other words, they were calmer and happier than before." ~ Psychology Today
Reduced stress can enhance creativity and performance, allowing us to reach our greatest potential. As one shining example, Steve Jobs practiced meditation regularly. It is understood by many that one of the objectives for his daily ritual was to improve creativity. After his passing, Steve Jobs continues to be revered as one of the most impressive creative icons of our time.
