Meditation and the Creative Mind

We've all seen the image of a light bulb associated with an original idea. But, what if many lights or original ideas came to us often - offering a constant stream of ingenuity.  How might that change our life - our career?

The Game Changer...When all the Lights Come On

Most of us feel fortunate to happen upon one great idea every so often. But what if your creativity was greatly improved?  Would your life experience be different if you found that many ideas came to you with ease?  What if you had access to these great ideas throughout the day? Maybe you would find a new approach to help your family or a better way to solve a problem at work. You might even dream up a more efficient and fun approach to your daily routine, to planning the perfect date, or a new approach to a client presentation. Could ramping up your creativity improve your personal life, your career, your enjoyment of life? Wouldn't that be a game-changer?
You might say that increasing your creativity would be of benefit only if you were in a specialized creative career, like an artist, actor, designer, songwriter, or chef. You might even continue to point out that you're not creative. For a moment, let's step outside the box. Let's assume that we're all designed to be creative.  Is your view of your potential limiting? Does your perspective come from a narrow lens?  Then take a step back, and widen your lens to embrace your full potential.
Despite the widely held belief that some people just aren't endowed with the creativity gene, "There's not any evidence that one person is inherently more creative than another," says Robert Epstein Ph.D. Instead, he says, creativity is something that anyone can cultivate.
~ From the article Science of Creativity, the American Psychological Association.
No matter what your career or life circumstances, creativity is one indispensable human resource. So how can meditation help? Accumulated stress can freeze the flow of your creativity, one common example is writer's block. "Stress is a well-known creativity killer," says psychologist Robert Epstein, Ph.D.

Reducing deep levels of stress through the regular practice of meditation can unleash your creativity while offering many other benefits including overall improved health. Seasoned meditators will wholeheartedly agree that creative sparks fly and solutions seem to arise effortlessly during meditation. Some meditators may even advise you to keep a pen and tablet next to you anytime you meditate, for the moments when creative lightning bolts strike. John Lennon himself found this to be true. It is told, his songwriting was deeply inspired during his meditations.

The recipe for creative success begins with inspiration, then expands to imagination, inventiveness, and originality.  Oh yes, and of course, don't forget to add a pinch of courage.

Meditation can also enhance our creative process by cultivating these four life skills:
Expanded vision - captures a view of the ultimate potential or the big picture.
Foresight - offers insight into what will be needed in the future.
Resourcefulness - the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.
Problem-solving abilities - finding solutions to difficult or complex issues - using both the analytic and the creative mind.
"The brain waves of meditators show why they're healthier. Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex—brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. In other words, they were calmer and happier than before."  ~ Psychology Today
In summary
Reduced stress can enhance creativity and performance, allowing us to reach our greatest potential. As one shining example, Steve Jobs practiced meditation regularly. It is understood by many that one of the objectives for his daily ritual was to improve creativity. After his passing, Steve Jobs continues to be revered as one of the most impressive creative icons of our time.
